LL-LL,L-LLL, LLL-L Value? PDF Print E-mail

With LL-L and LL-L nearing a total registration (about 10,500 left), some people are now looking at premium 4 letter / 1 dash domains.  Although I agree that there are some great looking domains out there like go-go, to-go, e-buy, etc., when it comes to rarity value, it is my opinion that they have no worth and not worth the registration fee.

While there are some meaningful websites with these out there. The highest sale that I know that of for one of these is ba-hr.com for $2,288 it links now to a Scandanavian Law Firm, sales like these are very rare and are from endusers. Most domainers and investors do not see any value in them at present as there are just too many available at reg. fee. Further, I feel it will be many years before these are all registered as there are 1,370,388 possibilities for 4 Letters/ 1 Dash domains (which might also mean that they'd never be considered rare.)

All Possibilities
1,370,388 - LL-LL, L-LLL, LLL-L
36,750 - L-LL, LL-L
676 - L-LL

Acronym Examples:
e-LMM.com
eL-MM.com
LMM-e.com

With keywords, I guess it just depends on where you want your dash.
pe-ar.com
p-ear.com
pea-r.com

In closing, their are over 150 TLD's right now with .com, the king followed by .net, .org, and .de.  many more TLD's are in the planning stages which means there could be possible hundreds of possibilities for each keyword.  Example buy.at, buy.me, buy.com, buy.cc., etc..  These types of domains I feel in the future will pose the biggest competitor towards rare .com acronym domains.  The only thing that a domain like qxy-m might have going for it in the future is the .com appeal as it's definately not rare.   Yes, there is always the slight chance of an enduser wanting that name.  However, if your willing to pay a registration fee each year on 5,000 similar domains for the 1 in 5,000 chance that an enduser company like qxy.m approaches you someday, and better yet, wants to pay the $90,000 asking price you came up with counting in all the registration fees over a few years.  Yes, you might make out all right.  But, the odds are stacked against you.

Therefore, I think it would be better right now to concentrate of domains that are currently purchased "just because" they are rare.  Look for domain names that investors and collectors are actively registering, trading and buying.  With domaining, time is money, registration fees are annual, therefore if you going to go out on a limb and purchase a domain name that noone wants yet.  Do your research and ensure that it's among the best of the best for it's type, second rate won't help you recoupe your annual registration fees.
