Are N-NN.com's Undervalued?

NNN.com domain prices command top dollar in the short, rare, domain market, in fact, NNN.com sales often meet or most of the time beat the prices of LLL.com domains.  Further, compared to NNNN.coms, NNNNN.coms, NNNNNN.coms, etc., they are the KING.  Why?  Well, because they are smaller, rarer and there are fewer of them.  There are only 1,000 possible combinations (starting at 000) and in a world with billions of people and factoring in supply and demand, it's easy to understand why they are so valued.
NNN.coms are considered trophies for domain hunters...uh, I mean collectors and investors, as well as endusers.   You won't find one of these dropping without being caught before they reach the domain pool. ....(cont.)

So what set's these two short domains types apart.
1. The DASH
2. Only 1000 NNN.coms vs. 2000 N-NN and NN-N domains.
3. All NNN.coms have been reigstered for years vs. All N-NN and NN-N were registered since only February of 2008.

Those 3 main facts can turn a $40,000 domain into a $40 domain.  However, before we turn our nose up at the lowly N-NN.coms, perhaps we should step back and take a better look.  At one time the NNN.com wasn't the company president, he started out just as all domains do, in a pool of millions of numeric combinations.  However, as the internet grew, so did his power.  Like a vacuum, it started drawing the smallest numbers were sucked up first, leaving the larger, heavier numbers at the bottom....kind of like the pyramind below...
N
NN
NNN
NNNN
NNNNN
NNNNNN
NNNNNNN
NNNNNNNN

So, where would the N-NN fit into the pyramid above?  Well it wouldn't.  It just doesn't make a pyramid shape.

N-N
N-NN
NN-N
NNN-N
N-NNN
NN-NN
N-NNNN
NN-NNN
NNN-NN
NNNN-N
NNNNN-N
NNNN-NN
NNN-NNN
NN-NNNN
N-NNNNN

However, before you decide not to include the N-NN when building your pyramid, remember again how the NNN.com domain started out.  It was nothing until they were all registered, just like the N-NN.coms were until February.  However, the current going rate on a N-N.com is $1450 and up.  This fact alone, may be enough to begin building the tower above.  Who know, maybe someday the N-NN domain might be next to the top of the tower, in a penthouse sweet, with you beside it because you were smart enough to believe in him/her....uh, it before it grew to it's celebrity stature.

So, what do you look for when choosing numbers?  Well, there are lots of people who will tell you that 7's are lucky in the US or 8's are lucky to Chinese or 4's mean death in China.  Or, that 0's are the kiss of death...but, I don't buy into all that.  Further, look at the 5 most recent sales at Namebio....

249.com $92,000  2008-05-29 sevent.com
848.com  $24,000  2008-05-29  ricklatona.com
940.com  $12,100  2008-05-29  sedo.com
051.com  $7,167  2008-05-29  sedo.com
(Note: 940 has both a 4 and a 0.)

While, I don't have enough data to prove that 0's and 4's are less than premium, on a personal level I think what matters most with these is where the placement of the dash is. Dashes can add meaning in dates, prices and some words like 7-47 and B-52 because they add a pause when you say them.  I also prefer your 4-44 to say, 44-4 because it's easier to say and remember number groups that go from a smaller to larger value as that's how we learned to count. Last, a 2 (to) or a 4 (for) in front of a number seems to add more meaning to me.

Now, before I end this article, I just want to remind you that NO domain investment is risk free.  Further, most of you remember what can happen to towers and even pyramids over time.  So be careful, do lots of research and play it safe.  A diversified portfolio in my opinion is the safest.  If one domain type doesn't pan out, your only down say 10% not 100%.
